New lathe

This weekend I picked up an old wood lathe for turning wood. It’s made by Rockwell who became Beaver Rockwell, who then became Delta Rockwell. I figure it was made in the 70’s – All cast iron. I’d probably sell it if someone were interested. I might turn a table leg or two but I doubt I’ll want to make a wooden bowl.

New countertop

Last night I tried to replace the old off-white countertop in the main level bathroom with a new look one from Home Depot with a new tap.
The counter went in ok but the drain leaked a bit, I had to stop at midnight. I should have put the new drain in the sink first and then lowered it in the drain pipe. The drain pipe is forcing the sink drain off the the side making the rubber seal not fit properly.
I cut the countertop to fit on the table saw which went well.

I didn’t put those two rectangular side pieces on that fit up against the wall. I’m not sure what the point of those are but I’d have to recut the thing again. I think I’ll leave that out. Does your counter have those?

Frozen Koi

Ok, don’t make fun of me.
I have a koi fish pond in my back yard for the first winter this year and I’m not really sure of all the rules to keep them alive.
Apparently they can survive the cold if the pond is at least 3 feet deep. Mine is 4. They go in a hibernation-like state and don’t need to eat.

I had a fish pond in a house I grew up in that was all snow-covered and frozen and the goldfish survived when we discovered them in the spring.

I did not know you had to have a hole in the ice so the gases can be exchanged. If you don’t they suffocate.I think they’re all dead now. Actually I saw a couple frozen in the surface ice when I turned the light on from below, they’re sort of frozen mid swim probably trying to get up to breathe.

This weekend I tried to drill a little hole in the ice to see how thick it was and while I was drilling orange stuff came from my drilling. I drilled right through a fish !! What are the odds of that?
Horrified.

I’m not looking forward to the spring to deal with 7 fish corpses.

Fridge dying

Annoying.
I was trying to tape off woodworking VHS videos to my computer. There’s a limitation in my program that only lets you capture 20 minutes per piece, filesize limit? So I had to sit there for a 2 hour video and join together 20 minutes pieces. Then when I went to render the final video I ran out of disk space.

Then I found out my fridge isn’t cold anymore so I googled how it works and how I might fix it. Now I’m needing a repair guy by fri. evening before we leave for the weekend only to come back with everything bad. It’s not broken, just not as cold it used to be. The ice cream doesn’t freeze, bread isn’t solid and ice stays frozen. The fridge keeps the milk only cool on a jacked up setting.

Work is busy.

End tables update

This weekend I’ve finished the unfinished version of the end tables. They’re made of pine.
I’ve used the router to make the mortise and tenon joints for the lower shelf and the legs/cross beams. I glued them up and then routed the table top edges using a 1/2″ beading bit.
I wanted to take a picture before I stain and finish them.
