Gift card expired

I went to Sears today with a $15 gift card we found from last Christmas. Not too much you can do with that so I took the opportunity to get a crap load of sandpaper for woodworking. I got 4 packages each containing 5 sheets of 3M sandpaper – all of different grits.
When I went to the cashier she said the rewards giftcard had expired. I felt totally defeated by the system. I called and it expired in September 09 12 months from the date of purchase. No refunds and whoever used their points to get it doesn’t get refunded.

Congratulations Sears, you just got $15 towards your empire. Merry Christmas, now what do I get?

New block plane

What a surprise I had when I came home. My wife had a wrapped up present to give me which was totally unexpected. Even more unexpected was that it was my #1 thing on my wish list for Christmas this year, a low angle Veritas adjustable mouth bevel up hand plane (A2 blade) !

What a beauty, it’s like the Ferrari of hand planes. That could have been saved as my main gift, whoa Nelly.

Door salesmen

I admit, sometimes I can be crabby to people who come to my door Saturday morning and interrupt my breakfast to try and sell me something. I get a lot of people from random companies asking to see my natural gas bill. They always say, “Do you see written at the top of your gas bill.” “Are you sure you’re saving with us?”.

I’m not going to go get my bill and show it to you, it’s none of your business. I have no idea who your company is, just like the last guy who tried when my eggs were getting cold last week. I don’t understand what you’re trying to change or commit me to so get off my lawn before I put my boot up your ass.

Card scraper

I bought my first woodworking card scraper today, such a cheap little thing that’s so useful. It can scrape off the thinnest shavings of wood a hand plane could never do.

New microwave

We bought a new ‘inverter’ microwave lately, it’s really good if you’re in the market for a new one. It cooks different than a normal microwave – it cooks more consistently throughout. If you thaw frozen chicken breasts it does it way faster and doesn’t cook the edges white leaving the inside still frozen.

Entrance bench mortises

I spent 7 hours Sunday doing a mortise jig for a front entrance/shoe holder bench I’m working on. I had to make about 16 mortise holes for mortise and tenon joinery and I didn’t feel like banging them with dull chisels. It’s crude but I did them in about 10 minutes.
You can see some of the rails I did to make the frame with the mortises routed out on the table behind the jig.
